Demand is low for individual cable security cards, data show

Just 3,000 standalone CableCards were distributed to subscribers with TiVo DVRs and other cable-connected devices by the 10 largest U.S. cable providers during the most recent quarter, compared with more than 700,000 set-top devices with security cards provided by cablers, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association reports. Over 30 million cable-provided set-top boxes with security cards have been supplied, compared with 585,000 of the individual cards. The NCTA has argued that the Federal Communications Commission's ban on integrated set-tops is ineffective, but the FCC is beefing up its CableCard mandate with additional rules.
