Giant snails invade Miami, often carrying a parasite

African land snails that can grow to be as long as eight inches are plaguing five Miami neighborhoods, chewing plants, plaster and stucco and reproducing rapidly. Federal and state agencies have launched a mission to eradicate the gastropods, which can carry a parasite that can infect people with a strain of meningitis.
