Virus outbreak halts cat adoptions at Calif. shelter

Two cats at the Haven Humane Society in Redding, Calif., were euthanized after being diagnosed with panleukopenia and several others were also euthanized as a precaution against the spread of the virus, which is similar to the parvovirus in dogs and has a mortality rate of about 50% with treatment. The shelter had to euthanize more than 100 cats last year during an outbreak of the virus, which can be prevented with a vaccine.
