Government must find new funding sources for flood protection

The federal government needs to look for new funding sources for the maintenance and operation of levees and other flood protection structures across the country to keep them from deteriorating, according to a study by the National Research Council. The government may consider several initiatives, such as seeking private funding to maintain federal levees and expanding partnerships with the private sector to improve these structures, the report said. The Army Corps of Engineers also should pursue other flood-control strategies instead of building new levees to mitigate the risk, the report added.
