Brazil plans alternative Internet infrastructure

Brazil is working on plans for an alternative Internet infrastructure using optical cable connecting 12 South American countries with Africa and Europe but largely avoiding any contact with the U.S. The initiative is part of Brazil's response to revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency spied on the communications of Brazil's government and the state-run oil company Petrobras.
