EPA receives court order to determine new water-pollution limits

The Environmental Protection Agency has been given six months by the U.S. District Court in eastern Louisiana to decide whether it will impose numeric-specific water-pollution limits. This could have implications for wastewater treatment plants in states that now have only narrative criteria, according to Nathan Gardner-Andrews, general counsel at the National Association of Clean Water Agencies. Numeric standards would mean some wastewater treatment facilities would need costly retrofits and improvements, he says.
