Q-and-A: Wilmut discusses cloning plans

Ian Wilmut, the U.K. biologist who led the team that cloned Dolly the sheep, said in a recent interview that there is a need to explain research on stem cells to the U.K. public to help them better understand the science. Wilmut also says he plans to use a newly developed assay to identify which factors in an extract from mouse embryonic stem cells are important in gene expression and suggests that a reprogramming approach, producing stem cells from adult cells, could be "preferable" to traditional embryonic stem-cell research.
