District recognizes need for professional-development time for teachers

An Iowa district is setting aside time for teacher collaboration and professional development that some say is urgently needed. Some district teachers are meeting before the school day begins, and some schools are including time for teacher planning and training in the school day. A report this year found that teachers need about 50 hours of professional development to improve their skills in a certain area, but school leaders say time for training is scarce. Iowa law sets a goal of 10 days of professional development, but the state does not keep track of training.
