Getting past airport security as soon as possible, securing luggage with plastic ties and carefully planning ground transportation and lodging are key ways to improve your safety while traveling, experts say. Christopher Falkenberg, a former Secret Service agent who runs a risk management and security consulting firm, says travelers should make security precautions a priority. He also urges travelers to visualize their response to an emergency situation and pay attention to safety instructions. "People who read the safety cards and plan ahead have a better chance of survival," he says.
