Lufthansa has squeezed the rows in some of its planes closer together to add more seats, pleasantly surprising some passengers. The ultrathin seats use a strong mesh rather than thick foam padding. The change is a win-win for passengers and the airline, says columnist Scott McCartney. "At knee level, because of the magazine-pocket relocation and other changes in the slim design, passengers get more than an inch of additional room," writes McCartney.
