Microscopic-bug picture wins first prize in "small world" contest

A bug bite led to a first-place prize in a photography competition for Igor Siwanowicz. He stored the lacewing larva in a test tube, then took a magnified picture of it. "My art causes a dissonance for its viewer -- a conflict between the culturally imprinted perception of an insect as something repulsive and ugly, with a newly acquired admiration of the beauty of its form," he told Nikon, which ran the contest.
