Maryland county helps foreign-born parents make sense of school world

As the number of immigrant students rises, Howard County has created a new outreach program that teaches parents English by explaining how schools work. Volunteer teachers help the adults bridge language and cultural divides and expand their vocabularies by discussing fire drills, media specialists and field trip permission slips.
