All sides eye Miers warily

LGBT advocacy groups and anti-gay groups alike find Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers' scant public record on gay rights issues unsettling. Both sides point to her answers on a 1989 candidate's questionnaire on gay issues as proof she is either reticent to embrace the movement or "helping to legitimize the drive of homosexual organizations for power and influence over our public policies," as the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins put it. President George W. Bush this week sought to reassure wavering conservatives, telling them to trust that Miers agreed with his own judicial philosophy.
