GAO: Health care-associated infections may be underreported

A new study from the Government Accountability Office found that states may be underreporting the cases of health care-associated infections in hospitals. The report said many states use the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network system, which relies on self-reported infection data, and do not have established procedures for validating these data.
