Interest grows in green roofs

The number of buildings being retrofitted with green roofs is on the upswing. Toronto, Houston, New York, Portland, Washington and Seattle have all joined the bandwagon and offer tax incentives, rebates and higher-density building allowances to builders and companies that install the energy-saving roofs. Chicago, which has about 400 green roofs downtown, estimates it could trim 750 megawatts from its energy needs if all roofs were topped with green.
