Programme seeks to combat teacher shortage in South Africa

A new programme in South Africa could help combat the country's critical shortage of mathematics and science teachers by recruiting recent graduates to act as "ambassadors" in disadvantaged schools, teaching maths, science, English or technology. Fifteen schools have been identified for the programme initiated by Teach South Africa, and officials say all ambassadors will be tested to ensure proficiency in the subject they wish to teach.
