Aviation execs cite ways that plastics can make planes lighter

Aviation executives at the Asian Aerospace International Expo and Congress in Hong Kong last month were optimistic that plastics will make aircraft lighter and greener -- especially in nonstructural applications. "There is a huge potential, even in the structural components, for new materials from metallics ... and reinforced carbon fiber plastic materials," said Axel Kahsnitz, CEO of Germany's Recaro Aircraft Seating.
