Case: REITs continue to book better gains than general equity market

With the first three quarters of 2010 behind us, it is clear REITs are continuing their trend of posting stronger gains than the general equity market -- something they have done dating to the start of 1972, when data first became available, said Brad Case, NAREIT vice president of research and industry information. The FTSE NAREIT All REIT Index delivered an 18.5% total return and the FTSE NAREIT Equity REIT Index delivered a 19.1% total return for the year-to-date through Sept. 30 -- compared with a 3.9% total return for the S&P 500. One factor driving returns is a sense among investors that fundamentals are starting to improve in the broader economy, Case says.
