Should students care for a classroom pet?

Some say that having a classroom pet can improve learning and help students develop empathy and other social skills, while others believe students should take on the responsibility for a pet at home. One Canadian teacher, who has a bearded dragon in his classroom, says students share feeding responsibilities, and have learned about the species by having the reptile nearby. He does admit, however, that the pet can become a classroom distraction.
