Researchers use Twitter to "watch" an NFL game

The flow of tweets about NFL games contains enough data to allow entire games to be accurately reconstructed, with precise information about the timing of touchdowns, interceptions and other actions, scientists say. The researchers' monitoring techniques could be used to mine Twitter for real-time updates about events such as power outages or political debates. "The signal is there in the data; it's just a matter of finding it," says researcher Lin Zhong.
