L.A. mayor aims to take over schools

In a reversal of earlier statements that indicated he planned to wait until he could build consensus, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced yesterday he now will seek control of the city's schools before the end of his current term. One school board member protested the mayor's use of the word "crisis" to describe the district and predicted the mayor probably would reconsider takeover plans.
