Maryland district leaders want to renegotiate raises amid "dire" shortfall

A planned 5.3% raise for teachers is likely no longer possible amid a projected $250 million shortfall faced by the county for fiscal 2010, said Montgomery County, Md., superintendent Jerry D. Weast and school board president Nancy Navarro. Teachers union leader Tom Israel says the union has not agreed to a renegotiation.
