Fannie, Freddie aim to help mortgage lenders acquire credit

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are preparing to provide advance commitments to buy certain types of mortgages to help independent mortgage banks gain short-term credit, sources said. A lack of funding from warehouse lenders has forced many mortgage banks out of business and others to rein in lending. The government-backed mortgage firms are trying to reverse that trend.
