Interior Department signs 28-year lease on Cape Wind project

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has signed a 28-year lease for the Cape Wind project, clearing the way for construction of a major wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. The planned project will produce 75% of the energy required by Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, using 440-foot-high turbines spread over a 25-square-mile area of the open sea. Opponents say the plan will spoil the site's natural beauty and could cause a "catastrophic kill" of some of the 6 million seabirds that migrate through the region each year.
