Is it time to start planning LEED 2.0?

The LEED green-building certification has helped to create demand for energy-efficient buildings and kick-start the U.S. sustainable-construction sector, writes Vijaya Yellamraju -- but there are plenty of new technologies on the horizon that may make the sector even greener. Ultimately, Yellamraju argues, standards will have to grow tougher to encourage designers to aim for zero-emission, energy-neutral buildings. "The ultimate goal that the building design community should strive for is zero energy buildings," Yellamraju writes. "... [V]oluntary programs such as LEED will constantly evolve themselves to push the building community toward achieving the coveted net zero status."
