Last-minute back-to-school sales boosted retailers' September results

Retail sales increases beat analysts' estimates in September, largely because of a late burst of back-to-school shopping, CNBC reports. Department stores and teen retailers, including Abercrombie & Fitch and Zumiez, fared the best during the month. Analysts cautioned that much of the growth came as consumers snapped up discounted items, which may be a mixed blessing for merchants heading into the holiday season.
