San Bruno pipeline was corroded, brittle, say experts

The San Bruno natural gas pipeline that exploded in California last month may have been brittle and corroded, according to engineering experts who called into question the gas industry's accepted inspection and maintenance practices. Many of the country's pipelines were laid between 1950 and 1970; the industry has long relied on mathematical models to determine safety. Those models are now being called into question.
