DOD approves future development of rotorcraft

Four companies have approval from the Department of Defense to move forward with designs for next-generation vertical-lift aircraft. Designs are aiming for increased speed, capacity and fuel efficiency, with some resembling conventional helicopters while others will be tilt-rotors. The next stage of design will take nine months, with prototypes ready to test as soon as 2017.
