Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is urging lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling by Oct. 17 or face a possible debt default. "On the 17th, we run out of our ability to borrow, and Congress is playing with fire," Lew said. "If they don't extend the debt limit, we have a very, very short window of time before those scenarios start to be played out." Meanwhile, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, says it is "time for us to stand and fight." Republicans will not allow legislation to pass to increase the debt ceiling unless the White House is willing to move on issues such as health care, Boehner says.
