Researchers devise early warning system for sinkholes

Radar-equipped satellites and planes, along with ground studies, are helping scientists predict where sinkholes might occur along the Dead Sea shore. The researchers discovered patterns of emergence that can tell them when to alert officials. "In one case, we alerted the government, and they designed a road that bypasses the sinkhole area," said Tel Aviv University geophysicist Ran N. Nof, the study's co-author.
