Sands may point to better sound deadening, smaller electronics

The "singing" sands of Manchester-by-the-Sea near Boston provide a clue that may lead to more effective sound mitigation and smaller electronics. The key lies in the ability of silicon grains of sand 1 micron in diameter to slow acoustic waves across a substrate by a factor of four to six, according to research by a team led by Nicholas Fang, a professor in Massachusetts Institute of Technology's department of mechanical engineering.
