Proposal advocating race-blind society soundly defeated

California voters yesterday rejected Proposition 54, an initiative to prevent the state and other public entities, including schools, from collecting racial and ethnic data, by a nearly 2-1 margin. Opponents of the measure had said that suppressing such information would thwart anti-discrimination efforts and medical research.
