Having seen financial stocks drop 23% after the short-selling ban kicked in, market observers wondered whether the ban, due to expire at midnight Wednesday, saved markets from anything. "You can never change the path of a stock," said Andrew Fishman, president of asset manager Schonfeld Group. "If it's going to go down, it's going to go down." Few expected short-sellers alone to spark another precipitous stock-market plunge.
