CBO estimate puts U.S. deficit at record $1.4 trillion

In its final estimate before the official figure is announced, the Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. deficit for the year that ended Sept. 30 was a record $1.4 trillion. The deficit for the 2008 fiscal year was $459 billion. On a positive note, the CBO said the government's interest payments on debt decreased 23% to $199 billion due to lower interest rates.
