Democrats push for more stimulus measures despite deficit

The fiscal 2009 federal deficit stands at $1.4 trillion, a fact that could make it difficult for some legislators to support extending economic-stimulus measures -- including a tax credit for homebuyers and an extension of unemployment insurance. "I think we should not lose sight of the deficit, and the extra effort it's going to take to keep the deficit going down to a supportable level in the future," said Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., chairman of the House Budget Committee.
