A coalition of civil rights and consumer groups has called for a nationwide freeze on home repossessions by banks. Lawmakers are also cracking down. Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., urged lenders to voluntarily halt foreclosures until internal investigations can be completed. Meanwhile, the banking industry is warning that a foreclosure freeze could delay the housing market's recovery.
