Commissaries began reopening Monday after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said civilian employees could go back to work. About 170 stateside stores reopened after having closed their doors Oct. 1 when parts of the federal government shut down. "We're doing everything we can to ensure that our shelves are properly stocked. There will be a short adjustment period as our stores settle back into their pre-shutdown operating and delivery routines," said commissary agency spokesman Kevin Robinson.
