Packaged bars are the next big thing in American eating

In recent years, the trend toward prepackaged, shelf-stable bars on the go as a meal replacement has grown so large that an estimated 20% of Americans eat some kind of bar each day, according to Harry Balzer, chief food industry analyst for the NPD Group. Balzer attributes the popularity and success of bars to the fact that they satisfy three important product traits: convenience, value and something new.
