Packaging-makers must be proactive supply chain partners

Companies that manufacture and supply packaging should start developing a verification tool for material and equipment used because food-makers will soon be requesting it under the Food Safety Modernization Act, says Shari Plimpton of the Center for Innovative Food Technology. Food manufacturers must increase tracking of safety data, adding work for vendors. Packaging suppliers need to provide data on potential risks, such as bisphenol A, "and specifically what they're doing to mitigate those risks," Plimpton said.
