Public health alert issued for Foster Farms chicken

A public health alert was issued Monday by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service after an estimated 278 people in 18 states contracted salmonella from consuming chicken produced by three Foster Farms plants in California. Foster Farms has not issued a recall on the products, but the company and FSIS are urging consumers to properly handle and prepare raw poultry to prevent illness. "It is also important to reassure the public that the FSIS process has not been affected by the recent government shutdown," said Robert O'Connor, Foster Farms' food safety chief and head veterinarian.
