U.S. Treasury considers taking ownership stakes in banks

To restore confidence in the banking system, the U.S. Treasury Department is weighing using the $700 billion rescue legislation to take ownership stakes in some banks. Banks could request a capital injection from the Treasury in return for ownership positions. Doing so would strengthen the banks' balance sheets and could prompt them to begin lending again.
