Retailers wring 0.6% sales growth from slumping economy

For the retail industry, which had not seen sales improve for more than a year, September's feeble growth was welcome. Among stores open a year or more, sales increased 0.6% compared with September 2008, according to Thomson Reuters. Analysts had expected a 1% drop. "Let the retail recovery begin!" the International Council of Shopping Centers said.
