Performance bonuses help automakers rev up production

U.S. automakers are using performance-based bonuses and profit-sharing plans more often to boost production. Bonuses work because they emphasize the collaborative nature of manufacturing, says consultant Jim Kochanski. "One person working faster on the line doesn't speed up the line anymore," he says.
