Study: Messaging apps making inroads on smartphones

Although SMS usage remains almost universal among smartphone owners, a survey reveals that instant messaging and over-the-top messaging applications are making inroads. The report from Analysys Mason found that almost half of smartphone owners use the new services in addition to SMS. "The big news is the extent of IM messaging on smartphones was high across all markets," said Stephen Sale, lead analyst for Analysys Mason in London.
