China shadow-banking sector estimated at 40% of GDP

China's shadow-banking sector, at a new estimate of US$3.4 trillion, is substantially larger than the government has calculated and amounts to about 40% of gross domestic product, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The report notes the sector's utility but warns of increased liquidity risk and complications for monetary policy.
