Culture approaches make split corneal transplant possible

A study presented at the EuCornea meeting showed that organ culture methods that preserve donor grafts for a week can allow split corneal transplantation. Researchers found that split donor storage time and total storage time were correlated with endothelial cell loss, visual acuity as well as surgical complications. "Splitting corneal transplantation reduces costs and is an effective strategy to manage problems of donor shortage in areas like Asia or also some parts of Europe," said Dr. Ludwig M. Heindl.
