Google's backend starter kit could win PHP and Apple converts

Google's new free Mobile Backend Starter for iOS sets a standard for simplicity, John Koetsier writes. The cloud-based tools allow developers to add data, status, authentication and notifications to applications by filling out a Web form. The easy tie-in to the Google cloud platform represents a "threat to developers' ties to the iOS ecosystem, where Apple's tools for developers have tended to focus primarily on the app development side in Xcode and less on the cloud-centered needs of developers," Koetsier writes.
