How health care's merger trend can benefit nurses

More than 90 mergers of hospitals and health care systems took place in 2012, continuing a trend that can naturally bring fears of disruption and change. But consolidations can offer real and positive benefits for nurses, too, experts say, including greater job security and chances for advancement, better patient care through expanded access to specialized services, and often, fresh opportunities for cross-training and education. "Nursing care at the bedside is still essential. As best practices are implemented, changes will benefit patient care and nurses," Mountainside Hospital CNO and vice president Bonnie Michaels said.
