Experts: Hiring data signal a subtle shift in the U.S. labor market

A Labor Department survey suggests that private employers expect a need to take on additional workers soon, although they haven't started significant hiring. The survey found the number of job openings increased 33% in the 12 months that ended in August. Many workers who lost jobs in manufacturing don't have the skills needed in an expanding engineering sector, and employers are becoming more demanding in their evaluation of applicants, experts said.
