A "sensing skin" attached to concrete where cracks might occur, a sensor that determines deterioration in suspension bridges, and a computer model that uses data and algorithms to determine the scope of damage are some of the ways engineers and researchers hope to use to keep a constant eye on the integrity of bridges and buildings. However, the cost of support and maintenance of such systems could be too high to make these techniques economically feasible on a wide scale.
